Today I’m reviewing Big Twist Chunky Yarn. I’ve used the Big Twist Baby line as well as the original value line, so I wanted to see what their chunky version was all about. The Big Twist line is an exclusive yarn line that you can find at Joann Fabric stores. (Unfortunately this yarn has now been discontinued)
I originally bought this yarn with the intention of making a sweater for myself. However, after looking at the pattern, this yarn just wasn’t chunky enough and would need super bulky yarn instead. Instead, I’m going to use this yarn and make a blanket.
Big Twist Chunky yarn is 100% acrylic, which makes it a great candidate for a wide range of projects. It’s also a great yarn to use for charity projects or for those that like a little extra bulkiness to keep them warm in the colder months. Big Twist Chunky is considered a #5 bulky weight yarn, which you can use to make chunky hats, scarves, blankets, and even sweaters. This yarn is also machine washable.
Big Twist Chunky comes in both solid and ombre colors. The solid colors are 5oz or 195 yards where the ombre colors are 4.2oz or 165 yards. For the crocheters out there, the recommended hook size is a K-10.5. For the knitters, a needle size of US 10.5 is recommended. Because of the bulkiness of this yarn and the bigger crochet hook or knitting needles, your projects will work up quickly!
I picked up 5 each of Chunky Slate and Seabreeze. With this line, there are a few bright colors as well as some more neutral colors as well. Again, I originally purchased this yarn to make two sweaters for myself, but instead I’m going to make a blanket using these two colors together.
Right away, I noticed how soft Big Twist Chunky was. I always enjoy a good soft chunky yarn. A lot of times, the chunkier the yarn, the less yardage you get. However, I thought you got a good amount of yardage for the value of this yarn. Using coupons or waiting for a sale can also help you save some extra money. While using this yarn in a project, I feel like it’s sturdy enough to withstand a lot, but still feels soft to the touch. I felt like it glided through my crochet hook without any problems. If you’re like me and pull your yarn from the middle, be aware that this can sometimes be a little difficult to do with this yarn. I found myself digging to find the end and ended up pulling a good chunk out of the skein before I was successful.
Overall, I would recommend checking out Big Twist Chunky as it’s a sturdy yet soft yarn. While there aren’t a ton of colors in this chunky line, the colors that they do have are just beautiful. This yarn is versatile in that you can use it for a variety of projects as it’s machine washable. It’s also a great option if you’re looking for a thicker yarn to make hats and scarves with to keep you warm during the winter months. This was a nice addition to my yarn stash, and I can’t wait to see how the colors will look once worked into my blanket pattern.
