Today I’m sharing my newest blanket pattern, the Christmas Granny Square Throw. This blanket can be easily adjusted to be bigger or smaller. Likewise, this can be made in a solid color or as many different colors as you’d like.
This is a beginner-friendly pattern, but you do need to know the basics of crochet in order to make this pattern. Check out my tutorials of the different stitches needed for this blanket:

Let’s continue onto the pattern!
Christmas Granny Square Throw
MATERIALS:
- J-Hook
- (3) skeins each of Red Heart Soft in Wine and Dark Leaf and (2) skeins of Red Heart Soft in Off White (you can use any acrylic yarn for a total of 2,048 yards)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
FINISHED SIZE:
49×49
NOTE:
- After each round, you will turn your blanket. This helps to keep things straight and your granny square throw from slanting.
- You will make a chain 2 in each corner of the blanket. For each of the sides, you will make a chain 1 in between the stitches.
- You will switch colors every 5 rounds.
PATTERN:
Begin with magic circle, chain 3, [2dcs, chain 2, 3dcs, chain 2, 3dcs, chain 2, 3 dcs, chain 2] all inside circle. Slip stitch to top of chain 3. Gently tug on the tail to close up the magic circle. Turn.
Round 1: Slip stitch to chain 2 corner as well as in the chain 2 corner. Chain 3 and make [2dcs, chain 2, 3dcs, chain 1] all inside that corner. You may need to push your work over a little in order to make all of those stitches fit. Next, you will work in the remaining three corners using the following method: 3dcs, chain 2, 3dcs, chain 1. When you reach the beginning of the round, you will slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. Turn.
Round 2: Chain 3 and make 2dcs into that chain 1 space. This will be considered the side of your granny square. Chain 1 and in that corner space make [3dcs, chain 2, 2dcs, chain 1]. Next, work 3dcs in your next side (chain 1 space) and chain 1. Repeat around the entire square. Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. Turn.
You will repeat round 2 over and over again changing colors every 5 rows. I started with off white, then used wine (red color), and then used dark leaf (green). I repeated this sequence until my blanket measured 49×49.
When making a granny square, your blanket will grow pretty quickly. Just remember to turn your blanket after each row. This helps keep your granny square straight and not start to slant to the side. Feel free to change the color sequence and the sizing of your blanket as you wish.
