Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a single crochet stitch. The single crochet stitch is very easy to understand. In this lesson, I will go over how to make a single crochet stitch step-by-step and include pictures to help you along the way. Now, let’s get out those crochet hooks and yarn and begin!

To begin, you first need to start out with a slip knot and chain. If you don’t know how to make a slip knot or chain, please check out my previous lesson before continuing. You will start with 20 chains.

To begin making a single crochet (sc), count two chains from your hook. The loop on your hook never counts.  Next, insert your hook into this second chain.After that, yarn over your hook and pull through the chain that you just went through. You will now have two loops on your hook.

Finally, to complete the single crochet stitch, yarn over your hook one more time and pull through both loops on your hook. This completes your first single crochet.

To finish the row, insert your hook into the next chain and make another sc stitch. Continue making a single crochet into each stitch across. This completes your first row. You should have 19 sc stitches.

To continue onto the next row, chain one and turn your work. In the first sc from the previous row, insert your hook and continue making a sc into this stitch and into each stitch across. However, be careful not to miss the last stitch of the row as sometimes this can be hard to see. Continue making each row in the same fashion.

Again, your tension might be all over the place as a beginner, so your stitches might be a little too tight or a little too loose in some cases. For now, however, focus on making the stitch correctly and your tension will even itself out eventually. The more you practice, the better your stitches will become.
