Hey everyone! Today I’ll be sharing with you my very own basic hat pattern as part of my Crochet 101 series. This free pattern will help you learn how to make a double crochet stitch while also completing a beginner project. This basic hat pattern is available in a teen/adult size. Follow along with my step-by-step instructions and soon you will have your very own hat!

Please read below for the written pattern. The finished hat will fit a teen/adult. For a beginner, I recommend sticking to a solid color worsted weight yarn for now until you get more practice. Using a solid color will help you see the stitches better. However, if you feel ready, go ahead and try a variegated color. The great thing about this basic hat pattern is that you can use any color you would like. Feeling ambitious? Create a striped hat by changing colors! Check out this lesson where I teach you how to change colors in your crochet projects.

Materials:

  • I-9 crochet hook
  • Worsted Weight Yarn in any color (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Turqua)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Begin with a magic circle. Chain 2 (Note: you can also chain 4 and slip stitch to the first chain to form a loop. Chain 2 does not count as a stitch)

RND 1: Make 11 double crochets into the magic circle or loop. Slip stitch to first double crochet and chain 2 (11 double crochet)

RND 7: 2 double crochets in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 12 stitches. Repeat around and slip stitch into first double crochet. Chain 2 (56 double crochet)

RND 8: 2 double crochets in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 13 stitches. Repeat around and slip stitch into first double crochet. Chain 2 (60 double crochet)

RND 9: 2 double crochets in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 14 stitches. Repeat around and slip stitch into first double crochet. Chain 2 (64 double crochet)

RND 10: 2 double crochets in first stitch, 1 double crochet in next 15 stitches. Repeat around and slip stitch into first double crochet. Chain 2 (68 double crochet)

This is what your hat should look like after all the increasing rounds:

RNDS 11-16: 1 double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch into first double crochet and chain 2. (68 double crochet). Do not chain 2 after round 16.

To Finish: Leave at least 6 inches for your tail. Cut yarn. Yarn over your hook and pull through the last stitch of your row and tighten. To weave in all yarn ends, thread your yarn in your tapestry needle and go in between the stitches one way and back the other way. This will help keep your project from coming apart.

You now have your very own crochet hat! These make great gifts for family members, friends, and even yourself. You can even make a bunch and donate them to a local charity. I hope you enjoyed this basic hat pattern. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!

Amanda

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by! I’m Amanda, the crochet addict behind-the-scenes. I was always interested in crafting and being creative. One day I decided to learn how to crochet. I was instantly drawn to crochet and thought it was incredible how you could make something out of yarn and a hook. I guess you can say I’ve been ‘hooked’ ever since. Feel free to email me at amandacrochets@yahoo.com with any questions.
