Hey everyone! Today I’ll be sharing with you my very own half double crochet pet mat pattern as part of my Crochet 101 series. This free pattern will help you learn how to make a half double crochet stitch while also completing a beginner project. I hope you enjoy this free half double crochet pet mat pattern.

Video Tutorial:

Please read below for the written pattern. For a beginner, I recommend sticking to a solid color worsted weight yarn for now until you get more practice. Using a solid color will help you see the stitches better. However, if you feel ready, go ahead and try a variegated color. If you want to try using a bulkier weight yarn, make sure to change your hook size according to the yarn label.

Materials:
  • I-9 crochet hook (I used Clover Amour)
  • Worsted weight yarn (I used Big Twist Value)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure (optional)
Pattern:

Begin by making a slip knot. Chain 65.

ROW 1: Half double crochet (HDC) in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across. Chain 2 and turn. (62 stitches)

ROW 2: Chain 2 and turn, HDC in 2nd HDC and in each HDC across.

ROWS 3 and up: Repeat row 2 until pet mat measures 18 inches or desired length. I did a total of 42 rows.

**If you would like to make a bigger mat, simply increase the number of chains at the beginning and number of half double crocheted rows.

BORDER: Chain 2 and turn. HDC in 2nd HDC and in each HDC across. Make 3 HDC in first corner. Continue making 1 HDC in each stitch around with 3 HDC in remaining 3 corners. Slip stitch to beginning HDC stitch.

To Finish: Leave at least 6 inches for your tail. Cut yarn. Yarn over your hook and pull through the loop on your hook and tighten. To weave in all yarn ends, thread your yarn in your tapestry needle and go in between the stitches one way and back the other way. This will help keep your project from coming apart. See pictures below on how to weave in your ends.

Amanda

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by! I’m Amanda, the crochet addict behind-the-scenes. I was always interested in crafting and being creative. One day I decided to learn how to crochet. I was instantly drawn to crochet and thought it was incredible how you could make something out of yarn and a hook. I guess you can say I’ve been ‘hooked’ ever since. Feel free to email me at amandacrochets@yahoo.com with any questions.
