How to Make the Iris Stitch

Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the iris stitch. This is a beautiful stitch created using the chain stitch and double crochet stitch. This makes for an elegant, lacy look with lots of drape. It reminds me a little of the shell stitch we tried a few weeks ago.

For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. However, if you would like to try using a few different colors, please visit this lesson where I teach you how to change colors in crochet. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you want your foundation chain to be a multiple of 4 stitches plus 1 (or 5+5+5+5). When you have reached your desired length, you will add 2 more chains.  For the purposes of this tutorial, I am starting with 27 chains.

Row 1: Starting in the 5th chain from your hook, make (2dc, chain 1, 2dc) all in that same chain.

*Skip 3 chains and make (2dc, chain 1, 2dc) in next chain. Repeat from * to the last 2 chains. Skip 1 chain and make 1 dc in last chain. Chain 3 and turn.

Row 2: Skip the first 2 dcs and make *(2dc, chain 1, 2dc) into the chain 1 space from the previous row. Repeat from * to the end of the row. Make 1 dc into the turning chain. Chain 3 and turn.

That’s how to make the iris stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. This is slowly starting to become another one of my favorite stitches, and I’m positive you’ll learn to love it as well. I love the elegance of the iris stitch and how it looks when worked up. Use this stitch to make beautiful scarves, shawls, and even blankets.

Amanda

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by! I’m Amanda, the crochet addict behind-the-scenes. I was always interested in crafting and being creative. One day I decided to learn how to crochet. I was instantly drawn to crochet and thought it was incredible how you could make something out of yarn and a hook. I guess you can say I’ve been ‘hooked’ ever since. Feel free to email me at amandacrochets@yahoo.com with any questions.
