Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the seed stitch. This is a fun textured stitch by alternating single crochet and double crochet stitches. By alternating these two stitches across each row, you create a wonderful closed-work fabric that resembles the seed stitch in knitting. The seed stitch is one of those stitches that with time and practice, you will learn to love it and get into a rhythm.
For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). I recommend using a solid color in order to see the stitch definition more clearly. However, if you would like to try using different colors, please visit this lesson where I teach you how to change colors in crochet. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!
To begin, you want your foundation chain to be an even number of chains. For the purposes of this tutorial, I am starting with 26 chains.
Next, make a single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn.
Make a single crochet in the first 2 stitches.
Make a double crochet in the next stitch and a single crochet in the next stitch.
Complete the row by alternating between a double crochet and single crochet stitch. You should end with a single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
Next, make a single crochet in the 1st stitch, double crochet in the next, and so on until the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.
That’s how to make the seed stitch! Repeat that last row over and over again to practice. This is one of my favorite stitches, and I’m positive you will love it, too! If you’re interested in making a pattern, I have a baby blanket pattern using this stitch.
