How to Make the Trinity Stitch

Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the trinity stitch. This stitch has some resemblance to the moss stitch, but it’s worked up in a different way. To make this stitch, you will make small clusters of single crochets linked together by chains. The end result looks like a series of small squares.

For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). The trinity stitch looks great in a solid color, but feel free to change colors for a more interesting look. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need a multiple of 2+1 plus 1 more for the foundation chain (or an even number chain). For the purposes of this tutorial, I am making 24 chains.

ROW 1: Make one single crochet in 2nd chain from your hook.

Next, single crochet 3 together inserting your hook into the same chain as previous single crochet and then in the next two chains. *Chain 1 and single crochet 3 together by inserting your hook into the same chain as the 3rd leg of the previous cluster and then in the next 2 chains. Repeat from * to last chain. Make a single crochet in the same 3rd leg of previous cluster. Chain 1 and turn.

ROW 2: Single crochet in 1st stitch. Single crochet 3 together inserting hook in the same place as previous single crochet, then in the top of the next cluster, and finally in the next chain space. *Chain 1, single crochet 3 together by inserting your hook in the same place as 3rd leg of previous cluster, then in top of next cluster, and finally in the next chain space. Repeat from * to the end working 3rd leg of last cluster in last single crochet. Make 1 single crochet in the same place. Chain 1 and turn.

That’s how to make the trinity stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. The trinity stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in your next crochet project.
