How to Organize Your Yarn Stash

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I last gave you an update on how I organize my yarn stash. You can check out the original post here. A lot has changed since then, so I thought it would be a great time to talk about my updated yarn organization.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR YARN STASH

DETERMINE HOW MUCH YARN YOU HAVE

The first thing you want to do is to determine how much yarn you have. This will help you plan out how much storage you’ll need. Everyone is going to have different amounts of yarn, so what storage system works for one person may not work for you. That’s why it’s better to see what you have first and go from there.

Do you have yarn you can donate? If so, consider giving that yarn to friends and family or donating to a local charity or nursing home. This will help cut down on your stash a little.

STORAGE ORGANIZATION

There are lots of storage options out there for you to choose from whether you want open shelves or storage bins. For me, I decided to go with more of an open concept, but I also have some fabric bins as well. You can get the same fabric bins as I have here. This works well for me because it’s functional and practical. Within the cubes, I tried to organize my yarn by type. I have all of my Caron Cotton Cakes together while in other cubes I have all Red Heart yarns together.

The shelving unit I have is the IKEA Kallax shelf. I have two of the 8 cubed shelving units and one 16 cubed shelving unit. I have most of my yarn in one central location, but it has spilled over onto the other shelving units. On one of my units, I have some crochet books and binders with crochet patterns and business information. On the bigger unit, I have all of my Harry Potter books and Funko Pops. This Harry Potter collection has grown so much over the last few years, which is why I needed to get another Kallax shelf for my yarn.

OTHER YARN STORAGE SOLUTIONS

There are many different storage solutions as I mentioned. Below are some different examples of what I mean by this.

YARN STASH EVOLUTION

My yarn stash has definitely changed over the years. When I lived at home, I had one small storage bin of yarn. After I moved out, I had a small 9-cube storage shelf where I kept my yarn before getting a bigger storage unit (see photo below). During that time, I became even more addicted to crocheting and my yarn stash has since grown to what it is now.
