Hi everyone! Today I’m going to review the book Make Money Teaching Crochet by Marie Segares. The version I’m reviewing is the Workbook Edition. If you have ever been interested in teaching others how to crochet, Make Money Teaching Crochet is for you! This is a great hands-on guide to help you get ready to start teaching, whether it’s for the first time or if you want to expand your existing crochet teaching business in order to make more money.

What I like about Make Money Teaching Crochet is that fact that it’s well-organized. I like how Marie divided the book up into five different sections to help you understand everything.

Section 1: Getting Started-this section walks you through the questions who, what, where, when, why, and how. It also helps you to think about the first steps you’ll need to make for your crochet teaching business. Finally, this section will help you identify your short-term and long-term plans. This is a very helpful section as it helps break down why you want to teach others how to crochet, what age group you want to focus on teaching, what skill level you want to teach, and where you want to teach. Marie also talks about how a great crochet teacher needs to have certain skills and qualities, such as having good communication skills, confidence, patience, and good organizational skills.

Section 2: The Business Side of Things-like the section states, this section talks about the business side of your crochet teaching business. Marie talks about how some teachers wish to formalize their business by choosing a different business type. You can choose from sole proprietor (owned by one person, who is often the owner-operator) or a limited liability company (can be owned by one or more persons). Marie also talks about payment options as well as refund and cancellation policies. When it comes to pricing your classes, there are a few different options available. However, it’s best to look at your area and see what works for you. Finally, all those questions you may have regarding sales and self-employment taxes are included in this section.

Section 3: Marketing (It’s Not a Dirty Word)-this section, as stated in the title, is all about marketing. Many people are unfamiliar with the four P’s of marketing, which are product, place, price, and promotion. When it comes to marketing your business, there are a lot that goes into it. For example, once you know who your target audience is going to be, it’s best to find out all that you can about them. For example, where do they hang out? What problems does this group have that crochet might solve? What are they interested in?

Marie also talks about different marketing options such as promoting your crochet classes on social media, putting up fliers, and simply word-of-mouth. It might also help to consider affordable promotional items to market your business (think customizable pens and bamboo crochet hooks). Putting your business name on these types of supplies your students will use will help promote your business better. Also, it’s best to carry business cards with you everywhere, especially if you’re crocheting in public. People may ask questions and might be interested in learning themselves, so having business cards can come in handy. Wearing your finished crochet creations can also help and is a great conversation starter.

Section 4: Prepping for Class-this section focuses on how to prepare for class and how to have a great experience for your students while also enjoying teaching. Marie talks about the overall learning objectives for the students while also keeping in mind that some students might progress faster than others. She also talks about how it might be helpful to bring a swatch of each stitch as students can visualize what the stitch would look like. You can’t have a class without making sure you have everything packed and ready to go. This section talks about everything you should have on you before you start your class. This includes any handouts, class outlines or notes, pens and pencils, crochet hooks, yarn, watch or alarm clock, business cards, promotional items, water and a snack, and more.

If you’re teaching online, however, you will need to prepare a little differently. For example, you want to make sure you have good lighting in order for your students to see what you’re doing. You also might want to invest in a good microphone as well as the audio quality is just as important as the video quality. You also want to minimize distractions as you want your students to be focused on the tutorial at hand. Finally, Marie talks about how it’s a good idea to look back at your classes periodically to see what is working and what is not working.

Section 5: Resources-throughout the book there are various websites and tools mentioned that might be helpful. You will find all of these helpful resources in greater detail in this section. Whether you’re looking for email marketing help, fiber festival events, or membership organizations, you will find all that you’re looking for here. Again, this is a great section to look through as there are so many wonderful resources out there. It can also help you get more involved in the fiber community.

Appendices-this section includes sample forms and templates that you’re able to copy and use for your business.

After going through Make Money Teaching Crochet and looking everything over, I learned a lot about how to prepare for class in terms of marketing and what to include for each lesson. Again, I really enjoyed how Make Money Teaching Crochet was broken down into the different sections as it made it easy to understand each part more clearly. I thought this book was a great resource as it was filled with tons of helpful information. I also enjoyed the many cro-pro tips that are included throughout the book as well. Overall, I don’t really have a bad thing to say about this book. If you’ve been thinking about teaching crochet, Make Money Teaching Crochet is the book for you!
