Snuggly Baby Blanket

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my newest crochet pattern, the Snuggly Baby Blanket. This super soft, handmade baby blanket is made using beginner stitches with a cute ribbed border. It is the perfect baby afghan for a newborn baby and would also be an excellent baby shower gift that would be treasured for years to come.

For the Snuggly Baby Blanket, I used Premier Anti-Pilling DK. However, you can use whatever #3 light-weight yarn you’d like. I also used a size I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook. I highly recommend using my favorite crochet hooks, Clover Amour. You will also need a tapestry needle and a pair of scissors. Gather your supplies and let’s begin!

Materials:

  • (5) skeins of Premier Anti-Pilling DK in Porcelain Blue
  • I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Size:

30×30

Notes:

  • This blanket is worked in a multiple of 3 plus 2. This means you will multiply any number by 3 to get your desired width. Once satisfied, you will add 2 chains to the very end.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Your work may curl at the start and it may take several rows before the width is what it will be for the rest of the pattern.
  • The blanket is completely reversible and looks the same on the front and the back.

Snuggly Baby Blanket Pattern:

CH 101 (or any multiple of 3+2)

Row 1: SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each stitch across. CH 3 and turn. (100 SC)

Row 2: DC in the first stitch, *skip 2 stitches, (SC, CH 2, 3 DC) in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have 3 stitches remaining, skip 2 stitches, SC in the last stitch. CH 3 and turn. (130 stitches and 32 CH-2 spaces)

Row 3: 2 DC in first stitch, working in each CH-2 space across, (SC, CH 2, 3 DC), SC in the top of the CH 3 (131 stitches and 32 CH-2 spaces)

Rows 4-62: Repeat Row 3 for the pattern until the height of the blanket matches the width. Once you’ve reached your desired height, do not fasten off. Continue onto the border.

BORDER

Round 1: CH 1, do not turn.

SIDE (DOWN): SC evenly in the row end stitches. Make a SC in each SC row end stitch, and make 1 SC in the top and bottom of the CH 3. Do not work into the spaces. Exact stitch count doesn’t matter as you just want the stitches to be evenly placed.

BOTTOM: In the first CH, make 3 SC (corner made), SC in each stitch across, 3 SC in the final stitch across (corner made).

SIDE (UP): SC evenly up the side of your blanket (same as other side)

TOP: 3 SC in the first stitch (corner made). In the next stitch SC, *skip the next stitch, SC in the CH-2 space, skip next stitch, SC in the next 2 stitches. Repeat across until you have 1 stitch remaining. In the final stitch, make 3 SC (final corner made). SL ST to close round. (NOTE: the top will even itself out as you make more rounds of the border.)

Round 2:

CH 2, do not turn. DC in each stitch around. For each corner, work 9 DC into the center of the 3 SC from the previous round. Before closing your round, be sure to count your stitches. You will need to have an odd number of stitches. If you have an even number, add 1 DC in the last stitch. SL ST to beginning. (NOTE: Your corners may “balloon” out, but that will be fixed as the border grows).

Round 3: CH 2, do not turn. FPDC around the first DC, BPDC around the next DC. Repeat around entire blanket alternating FPDC and BPDC. SL ST to beginning FPDC.

Round 4: CH 2, do not turn. FPDC around the FPDC from the previous row, BPDC around the BPDC from the previous row. Repeat around entire blanket. SL ST to beginning FPDC.

Round 5: Repeat Round 4. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Amanda

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by! I’m Amanda, the crochet addict behind-the-scenes. I was always interested in crafting and being creative. One day I decided to learn how to crochet. I was instantly drawn to crochet and thought it was incredible how you could make something out of yarn and a hook. I guess you can say I’ve been ‘hooked’ ever since.
