Walmart Mainstays Yarn Review

Walmart has their own brand of yarn? Yes, you heard that correctly. Walmart has released their own line of yarn called Mainstays yarn. I picked up this Mainstays yarn recently for some upcoming projects, so I thought I would tell you my own thoughts on it. Read on to see if Mainstays yarn is the right fit for you!

REVIEW OF WALMART MAINSTAYS YARN

I’m sure you’re familiar with the Walmart Mainstays brand. They have home décor, rugs, towels, you name it. Now that they have their own yarn line, I knew I had to pick some up for myself and try it out. The Mainstays yarn only seems to be available in select Walmart locations that have a bigger sized yarn department, but you could always purchase it online as well.

MAINSTAYS YARN COST

When it comes to the Mainstays yarn, you get 397 yards (7oz) per skein of yarn. You can compare this to other major brands such as Red Heart Super Saver (364 yards or 7oz) and I Love This Yarn (355 yards or 7oz). Mainstays yarn is also super cheap, coming in at $1.97 per skein.

This yarn is considered a #4 worsted weight yarn. When looking at Red Heart Super Saver yarn, you can see that it’s slightly thinner. The recommended hook size is an I-9 or 5.5mm while the recommended needle size is a US 9 or 5.5mm. This yarn is 100% acrylic and is machine wash and dry.

THE FEEL OF MAINSTAYS YARN

I’ve been crocheting for years, and I can feel the difference between brands when working with them. Maybe you can feel the difference as well? The Mainstays yarn is soft, but it does feel a little cheap to me (that’s because it is). I can’t really put my finger on it, but once you work with it, you can tell that the fibers are just a little different.

Comparing this to Red Heart Super Saver, Mainstays feels softer, but not as soft as I Love This Yarn (if you’ve ever worked with ILTY, you know what I mean). As I mentioned above, the fiber of the Mainstays yarn feels a little different. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but I feel like some small sections tend to be a little fuzzier than others. This did not deter me from working with this yarn, though.

As far as washing this yarn, I felt like it came out even softer than before. However, I did notice that it shrunk a little, which is something to keep in mind. It also became a little fuzzier as well. As mentioned, this yarn is 100% acrylic, which makes it a perfect candidate for charity crocheting/knitting.

OVERALL

Overall, I’m pleased with the Walmart Mainstays yarn and feel like it’s a good value for the amount of yardage you get. It’s soft and comes in some great colors. However, I would like to see some variegated colors at some point. If you happen to be shopping at Walmart, I would check out your yarn section to see if this Mainstays line is available for you to try out.
