What Was Your First Crochet Project?

I get asked this question frequently, and I think it’s a very important question.  It is like knowing for people what was the first movie they watched, first book they read, or their first love. It has significance behind it.

The first crochet project I remember making is a scarf in some leftover yarn I found around the house. There wasn’t a label on this yarn, so I have no idea what brand it was. I just remember it was this minty green/turquoise color.

I was taught how to do the basic stitches, which was really difficult at the time. At first, I had a tough time trying to hold the yarn and crochet hook while trying to put the yarn through each stitch.  However, you learn a lot about yourself through the struggles.  It’s trial and error, and I’m a firm believer that you can get yourself untangled out of a mess if you keep at it.  Crocheting is always going to present some stumbles or some periods where you hit a roadblock.  It’s how you handle them that make you better at it in the long run.   If it just came easy, it would not be as much fun.

Once I became a little better at it, I was told that one of the easiest things to make was a scarf. I used the minty green/turquoise yarn and a red size F crochet hook to begin my scarf, which of course was all over the place. I couldn’t get the edges lined up as I kept crocheting too many stitches across. My tension was too tight, probably because of the small hook and with me trying to figure out how to hold everything. I kept tearing it apart until finally the edges started to line up properly. My tension became a little better and wasn’t as tight anymore. I also added tassels to each end.

Finally, I finished my first crocheted item! I felt so proud of myself for making my first scarf. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was something I made and it got my feet wet when it comes to learning crochet. There is beauty in the imperfection and it being your first project.  You always remember it fondly, warts and all.  It’s what got you started and helped you along the way.  It was breaking the ice.

Now I’m going to ask you: What was your first crochet project? Let me know by leaving me a comment. I’d love to hear about it and how you felt as you were dealing with it.  Don’t be afraid to be personal and share everything that went through your head.  We are all here together as one!

  • My first completed project was a single crochet baby blanket for my first newborn nephew. That was 2 years ago.
