Crochet Misconception #1: Crochet is for Old Ladies

No, crochet is not just for old ladies. More and more people of both genders are becoming interested in learning how to crochet for one reason or another. Crochet can be passed down from generation to generation. Nearly people of all ages, nationalities, and ethnicities are enjoying the art of crochet. Crochet doesn’t have a label on it. Instead, crochet is for everyone that is willing to crochet whether that be women, men, girls, boys, and everyone of all ages in between.

Crochet Misconception #2: Crocheting, Knitting, Whatever. It’s All the Same Thing Right?

This is one of the oldest misconceptions about crochet. I still have people ask me, “What are you knitting?” or “How is your knitting project coming along?” No, crocheting and knitting are not the same. Yes, they might have similarities, but they are two different techniques. When someone crochets, they are using one hook. When someone is knitting, they are using two needles.

Crochet Misconception #3: You Must be Expecting a Baby

Another crochet misconception is that if you’re working on a baby project, you must be expecting a baby. Unless you know for sure that a woman is having a baby, you should never ask when their baby is due. Yes, baby projects are popular amongst crocheters, but don’t assume that baby projects are the only thing crocheters are working on. Some crocheters might just like making baby items whereas some crocheters might like working on other projects such as hats and scarves. There are so many possibilities out there for crocheters to work on.

Crochet Misconception #4: Crochet can be Machine Made

Crocheters can spot what actual crochet looks like. Most of the time I can spot it pretty quickly, but sometimes I need to get a closer look to see if it’s actually something crocheted or simply a knitted or embroidered imitation. Many people think there’s a crochet machine out there. Sorry, but there is NO such thing as a crochet machine. The only way to produce a crochet item is by hand.

Crochet Misconception #5: Crochet Looks Hard to Learn

Crochet isn’t that difficult to learn. Yes, it might look hard at first, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier. I bet riding a bike wasn’t so easy at first. Even learning how to hold a pencil and write wasn’t easy at first. However, the more you practice the better you will become. Like I mentioned earlier, many people of all ages are learning how to crochet. As long as you have a willingness to learn and some patience, you could pick up some crochet skills in no time.
