How to Make a Double Crochet

Hey everybody! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make a double crochet stitch. This is the next tallest stitch after the half double crochet. In this lesson, I will go over how to make a double crochet stitch step-by-step and include pictures to help you along the way. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you first need to start out with a slip knot and chain. If you don’t know how to make a slip knot or chain, please check out my previous lesson before continuing. You will start with 20 chains.

To begin making a double crochet (dc), count two chains from your hook. Remember the loop on your hook never counts. If you follow other beginner crochet tutorials, you might find that they say to skip the first three chains instead. I find there is less of a gap if I skip two chains versus three. It’s all a matter of preference though. To continue, yarn over your hook and insert into that second chain (or third).

Next, yarn over your hook and pull through that chain you just went through. You will now have three loops on your hook.

Wrap the yarn around your hook and pull through the first two chains on your hook. Two loops will remain.

To complete the dc stitch, yarn over your hook one more time and pull through both loops on your hook. This completes your first dc.

To finish the row, yarn over your hook and insert it into the next chain making another dc as mentioned above. Continue making dcs into each chain across. This completes your first row. You should have a total of 20 dc stitches. The two chains you skipped at the beginning count as one dc.

To continue onto the next row, chain two and turn your work. Again, this is my preferred method as it leaves less of a gap than a chain three would. Skip the first double crochet stitch from the previous row. Yarn over your hook, insert your hook into the second stitch and begin making your double crochet in to this stitch. Continue making a double crochet in each stitch across. Be careful not to miss the last stitch of the row as sometimes this can be hard to see. Continue making each row in the same fashion.

Your tension might be all over the place as a beginner, so your stitches might be a little too tight or a little too loose in some cases. For now, lets focus on how to make a double crochet stitch correctly and your tension will even itself out eventually. The more you practice, the better your stitches will become.
