Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn Review

Today I will be reviewing Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn. This yarn is 100% acrylic and is machine washable. This is considered a #6-super bulky weight yarn, making it perfect for scarves, blankets, and other cold weather attire. The recommended hook size for crocheters is a size L-11, and for the knitters a size US 11. This yarn comes in a variety of different solid colors as well as variegated colors. Because of its thickness, your crochet and knitting projects work up quickly.

I originally bought Bernat Softee Chunky Yarn to make a pet bed project. I thought it would be fun to make my cat a bed while also trying out a yarn I normally don’t use. For this project, you hold two strands of this bulky yarn together while using a size M-9mm hook. The pattern itself is written, so even a beginner would be able to figure it out.

However, my hands kept cramping up while trying to make this pattern, even with the bigger hook. It was a little difficult to grab onto both strands of this bulky yarn without it falling off the hook multiple times. I also misread the pattern and bought four of the 3.5oz skeins rather than the 10.5oz skeins. I thought it was odd that I was running out of yarn so quickly! Anyway, after many attempts and aching hands, I decided to frog this project and try something else. I hope my cat won’t be too disappointed lol.

I decided to try out this pattern instead: Margaret Button Cowl. This is a free pattern by Jennifer of Fiber Flux. I’ve used this pattern before in the past and have fallen in love with it. This pattern worked up super quick (and my hands didn’t cramp up either).

When reading reviews, a few people said that some colors can be scratchy while others are softer. I tend to agree with them. I’m using Gray Heather, which I found to be pretty scratchy. However, after putting it in the washing machine, I found that it does soften up quite nicely.

Overall, I like how thick Bernat Softee Chunky is because you can make different projects to keep you warm, especially during the cold winter months. Again, some colors are a little scratchy while others are softer, but I didn’t let that stop me. I simply just threw it in the wash and it became much softer. I recommend this yarn to those that want a bulky weight yarn for warmth, but isn’t too heavy and weigh you down. You can purchase this yarn online or at your local craft store.
