Braided Crochet Cowl Pattern Review

Hey everyone! Today I’m doing a pattern review on the Braided Crochet Cowl by Karen Valladares. I discovered this amazing cowl after seeing it posted all over Facebook. Jonah, the 11-year-old crochet prodigy, made this cowl famous. Once I saw that a free YouTube video was available, I immediately grabbed some yarn and got to work.

BRAIDED CROCHET COWL REVIEW

As I mentioned, I first discovered this cowl on Facebook. I’m a part of a few crochet groups and they all seem to be posting about this braided crochet cowl. I thought it looked very elegant and knew that this was something I had to make immediately.

I was a little unsure how the braided crochet cowl was constructed at first. I’ve never made anything that had braids in it, but I figured if I watched the YouTube video it would make sense. After all, the tutorial was labeled as a beginner project.

The braided crochet cowl calls for a size H-8 crochet hook and some worsted weight yarn. I wasn’t exactly sure how much yarn I would need, as it wasn’t mentioned in the video, but I made sure I had enough of one color so I didn’t run out. To give you a better estimate, I used about a skein and a half of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn to complete this cowl.

I thought Karen did a great job in explaining how to construct this beautiful braided crochet cowl. The cowl itself is a two row repeat, which you can make as long as you’d like. She also shows you how the loops form the braids as well as the buttonholes. You will need a total of 4 buttons for this cowl.

The only complaint I have about this pattern is that I wish she showed where the buttons should be sewn onto the cowl. There are three buttons that are used to close the front, and another button behind the scarf to keep it secure. However, in the video, it was shown so fast that it makes it hard to really see where they should properly go.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Overall, I really enjoyed making the braided crochet cowl. It was very easy to follow and worked up quickly. I probably completed my cowl in a few days. Once I finished making the first one, I grabbed some more yarn and started making another one right away. It’s so satisfying to see this braided cowl worked up. When looking at it, it seems like it would be intricate to make, but it’s actually very easy.

I will definitely be making more of these cowls in the near future. They not only make great gifts for friends and family, but for you as well. It’s a nice thick cowl that will keep you warm in the cold winter months, but it’s also a great fashion accessory as well. I’m really happy to have discovered this amazing cowl!
