Today’s yarn review is going to be on the new Caron Cotton Cakes. This self-striping yarn is a new installment of the Caron Cakes yarn. You can read my review of the original Caron Cakes here or my review of the Baby Cakes yarn here. Caron Cotton Cakes comes in a lovely range of pastel shades, which makes it perfect for seasonal projects such as beach bags and summer shawls.
PLEASE NOTE: this yarn is intended for fashion only. Do not use it for dishcloths or towels. This is due to it not being made with 100% cotton. Please do not use this for your dishes or kitchen needs as it’s not designed for this purpose.
This yarn is made with a unique cotton blend as it’s a mixture of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. It’s considered a #4 worsted weight yarn, but I feel like it’s a little on the thinner side (think Caron Simply Soft thin). There is also a little bit of sheen to it, too. Once you see this yarn in person, you won’t believe it’s a high end yarn that’s affordable at everyday prices. This yarn is exclusive to Michaels Stores for a limited time only at $4.99 USD. That’s a great price!
Each skein of Caron Cotton Cakes is 3.5oz or 211 yards. For the crocheters out there, the recommended hook size is an H-8 (5mm) while for the knitters, the recommended needle size is a US 7 (4.5mm). This yarn is machine washable and dryable.
While working with this yarn, I found it gliding through my hands like butter. It’s super soft and was an absolute pleasure to work with. I picked up 3 cakes of Beach Glass. While there were other options available at the time that I went, this shade stood out to me. I decided on making a market bag with this yarn. I will talk about this pattern in an upcoming blog, so be on the lookout! However, after washing this yarn, I found it to come out even more velveteen soft. It held up well during both the washing and drying cycles.
Overall, I found Caron Cotton Cakes to be a very enjoyable yarn to work with. I love the colors this yarn comes in. I hope they extend the line to be more permanent and include more colors to choose from. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find this at my local Michaels stores as it’s sold out. I’m glad I bought it when I did! Hopefully in the future (if they decide to make this line more permanent) they will allow consumers to purchase this online as well.
I hope you enjoyed my yarn review on Caron Cotton Cakes. If you’re able to get your hands on it, I recommend giving it a try. Have you tried this yarn before? If you have any questions or comments on today’s review, please leave me a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!
