Knitcrate-February 2021 Review

Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing my thoughts on Knitcrate! I reached out to Knitcrate and asked if I can review their products. In return, they sent me a coupon code to try their subscription for the next 3 months. Of course, all opinions and thoughts are completely my own. I am not being paid for this review. Stay tuned a little later where I share a coupon code with you to get some money off your first month’s subscription!

Let’s jump right in!

What is Knitcrate?

A lot of yarn companies have some sort of subscription box or monthly yarn club. Knitcrate is no different. Knitcrate is a yarn subscription box you can set up once and every month you get a new special treat in the mail. You don’t have to worry about reordering every month as your subscription will automatically renew. Don’t worry, however, as you can cancel at any time.

Membership Options

There are a few different membership options to choose from:

  • Knitcrate Membership: Every month, you will get at least one (usually two) skeins of exclusive premium yarn, ranging from DK to Bulky weight yarn. There are four color vibes to choose from (Energize Me, All Natural, Chill Out, or Anything Goes), but the exact shade and yarn base is a monthly surprise.
  • Sock Crate Membership: This crate is designed specifically for those that love making socks. In this crate, you’ll get one skein of exclusive premium sock weight yarn each month. You can also pick from four color vibes (Energize Me, All Natural, Chill Out, or Anything Goes), but the exact shade and yarn base remains a monthly surprise.
  • Partner Crates: These crates are quarterly partnership crates with specific yarn dyers. Currently, Knitcrate is partnering up with Malabrigo and Mrs. Crosby.

All crates come with the following:

  • Pattern booklet that contains 3+ crochet and knit patterns to go along with the yarn. These are high-quality, curated patterns specifically designed for that month’s crate and not available anywhere else.
  • You also get a little something extra. This varies by month, but it can be a cute stitch marker, measuring tape, etc.

Membership Costs

Monthly subscription boxes can vary in prices. For Knitcrate, a membership box is $24.99 USD a month, including shipping and handling. This also includes international shipping!

  • Knitcrate Membership: $24.99 USD
  • Sock Crate Membership: $19.95 USD
  • Knitcrate 3-Month Gift Plan: $74.95 USD (This is a great option if you want to try it out for a few months to see how you like it without worrying about forgetting to cancel.)
  • Malabrigo Quarterly Partner Crate: $45.00 USD
  • Crosby Travels Partner Crate: $69.99 USD

If you’ve never used premium yarn before, you might think $24.99 USD for a couple of skeins of yarn is crazy. Trust me, premium hand-dyed yarn of this quality is usually double this plus shipping. For the Knitcrate Membership, the total box is estimated around $63.00 USD. Let’s break that down:

2 skeins of yarn ($26 per skein) $52

3 patterns (est. $3 per pattern) $9

Total cost: $63 USD

What’s to Love About Knitcrate?

There are a few things to love about Knitcrate:

  • I get to discover new yarns each month on different yarn bases, weights, and colors I might not have picked out myself.
  • Each month, I get to discover new pattern designers each month.
  • I love that I can choose my color vibe, but still get a surprise every month. If you don’t like surprises, Knitcrate sends out a link to a reveal video where you’re able to see the color options and change your settings before your crate ships out.
  • They have amazing customer service! I found them to be extremely helpful and are quick to respond back. This shows they actually care about their customers and want to make them happy.
  • They collaborate with smaller designers and indie dyers by helping them get their name out there, coaching them, and paying them honestly. Who wouldn’t want to support small businesses?

What’s Not to Love About Knitcrate?

Nothing in life is perfect, so there are a few flaws with Knitcrate. These will vary person to person:

  • While you get to choose which color vibe you like best, you don’t get to choose the exact color yarn you receive. This is completely random, so if you get a color you don’t like, this can be a little disappointing. Or if you don’t like surprises, a subscription box may not be for you.
  • Included are crochet and knit patterns. These patterns are clearly written and easy to follow. They’re designed for advanced beginners, which is a wonderful level to include because it’s not too hard and not too easy. However, they may not always be your cup of tea, which is completely fine. You can always use the yarn for another project you have in mind.

Now let’s take a look at my first Knitcrate box.

February 2021 Knitcrate Review

This is my first time receiving my Knitcrate subscription. I’ve heard a lot about this yarn subscription, so I knew I wanted to try it out. I was happy to receive my box in the mail and can’t wait to dig in and see what kind of goodies I received.

First off, this month’s subscription is a little different because they weren’t able to get the yarn they had planned for February shipped in time due to shipping delays. Because of this, they swapped the February yarn with the March yarn. This means in February you’ll receive the yarn from March’s subscription and in March, you will receive the yarn from February’s subscription.

What’s Inside?

Theme: The theme for this month’s Knitcrate is Unwind. If you have the eco-friendly mailer, all the patterns are available digitally whereas in the cardboard box crate, you will receive a printed booklet with the patterns inside. The patterns include both crochet and knit patterns to go along with this yarn.

Yarn: I received two skeins of Audine Wools Yarn. This is an 80% wool, 10% silk, and 10% mohair blend yarn. It’s a DK or lightweight yarn. The color I got is called Tranquility, and it’s a muted, soft green color. This colorway has shades of shadowed greens with some subtle blue tones and a little touch of gold. It’s a very pretty color! It’s very soft and squishy and not itchy at all. The yarn has a little bit of fuzziness to it due to the mohair.

Extra: The fun extra I got was this heart shaped retractable measuring tape. I really like the quote on the measuring tape, which says, “All you need is yarn.” You can never have too many measuring tapes handy.

Overall Verdict

While I wasn’t absolutely in love with the patterns, I am very happy with this month’s Knitcrate subscription. The quality of the yarn is top-notch, and I love the fun extra they included inside. I like how you have different color vibes to choose from, but the yarn you receive is a complete surprise. I have the “Anything Goes” color vibe as it’s so hard to choose from all the pretty colors. It looks like this month I received a color for the “Energize Me” color vibe.

If you’re interested in giving Knitcrate a try, you can use coupon code “AMANDACROCHETS” and receive 20% off your first Knitcrate subscription. Trust me, you will love it! However, if you decide this yarn subscription isn’t for you, you can cancel it at any time.

Thank you so much for joining me today as I share my thoughts on the Knitcrate yarn subscription with you. I hope you enjoyed my review and consider giving this subscription a try. Let me know in the comments below if you’d tried this yarn subscription before. I’d love to hear from you!
