How to Make the Blanket Stitch

Hey everyone! Today I’m going to show you how to make the blanket stitch. I recently discovered this stitch and it was love at first row. The blanket stitch is a great stitch as it’s a dense fabric, making it ideal for blankets, washcloths, and scarves. It’s definitely going to be my new “go-to” stitch. This stitch uses two basic stitches (single crochet and double crochet) that work up quickly and easily. Once you get the repeat pattern down, you can sit back and relax without having to pay much attention to it.

To get started with today’s tutorial, you will need some worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart with Love. You will also need a size I-9 crochet hook. You can read my review of the Clover Amour Hooks here. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need to make a chain in a multiple of 3. That means you will chain 3+3+3+3 until your desired length. For the purposes of this tutorial, you will chain 39.

Next, you will make 2dcs into the 3rd chain from your hook.

*Skip 2 chains and make 1sc and 2dcs all into the next chain. Repeat from * all the way down to the end of your row. You will make 1sc into the last chain. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 2: Make 2dcs into the very first sc. *Skip 2 stitches and make 1sc and 2dcs all into the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row. Sc into the last stitch. Chain 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 for as long as you would like to practice. This stitch is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Because it’s a repetitive pattern, it can be meditative in nature as you’re stitching along.
