How to Make the Pineapple Cluster Stitch

Hey everyone! In today’s Crochet 101 lesson, I’m going to teach you how to make the pineapple cluster stitch. This stitch is also known as the popular puff stitch. Each cluster is made up of four half double crochets that are joined at the top by a chain stitch.

For today’s tutorial, you will need worsted weight yarn (I’m using Red Heart Super Saver) and a size I-9 crochet hook (I’m using Clover Amour). The pineapple cluster stitch looks great in a solid color, but feel free to change colors for a more interesting look. Click here to learn how to change colors. Gather up your supplies and let’s begin!

To begin, you will need a multiple of an even number of stitches plus 2 more for the foundation chain. For the purposes of this tutorial, I’m making 18 chains.

ROW 1: Make 1 pineapple stitch in the 4th chain from your hook.

To make a pineapple stitch, yarn over and insert your hook as directed. Next, [yarn over and pull up a loop] four times. You should have 9 loops on your hook at this point. Yarn over and pull through the first 8 loops on your hook. Finally, yarn over and pull through the 2 remaining loops on your hook. Chain 1.

*Skip 1 chain and make a pineapple cluster in the next chain. Chain 1. Repeat from * to the last 2 chains. Skip 1 chain and make 1 double crochet in the last chain. Chain 3 and turn.

ROW 2: Make 1 pineapple cluster in the chain-1 space from the previous row. *Chain 1 and skip over the pineapple cluster from the previous row. Make 1 pineapple cluster in the next chain-1 space. Repeat from * to the last pineapple cluster. Chain 1, skip the last pineapple cluster, and make 1 double crochet in the turning chain. Chain 3 and turn.

That’s how to make the pineapple cluster stitch! Repeat row 2 over and over again to practice. The pineapple cluster stitch might require some practice at first, but the more you practice, the easier it will become. Use this stitch to create some fun texture in your next crochet project.
