When Bad Things Happen to Good Crocheters Book Review

Today’s book review is going to be on When Bad Things Happen to Good Crocheters by Beth Wolfensberger Singer. We purchased a copy of this book for our collection at work, which is how I first discovered it. I quickly read through it and immediately had to purchase a copy of my own! I found myself laughing out loud more than once.

When Bad Things Happen to Good Crocheters is jam packed with a lot of wonderful information such as how to read a crochet pattern, learning how to fix mistakes, and learning some shortcuts along the way. Beth’s writing has an ease about it that makes you fly through the pages. She also makes some witty references to pop culture.

At the beginning, she explains what each crocheter needs to have in their crochet kit. You can also check out my list here on what supplies I think you need in your crochet kit. She also explains the anatomy of a crochet hook, which you can also read my post about on this here. If you want to learn all about the different yarn weights, Beth provides a handy dandy chart for you to look at. Again, you can see my post here, where I talk about yarn basics.

Beth goes on to talk about how to read crochet patterns and provides a graph of what each crochet symbol looks like. Patterns tend to be abbreviated, so if you’re unsure what something means, Beth has it laid out in a helpful chart.

I also like how there are quotes, stories, and examples by different people in the crochet community. Also mentioned in this book is the ever-popular Twinkie Chan. I like this added touch as I feel like I’m not alone in making the same mistake as someone else.

Finally, there are six different crochet projects to practice your skills on, which is always great.  Some of these projects include a bag, mug cozy, and scarf.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend When Bad Things Happen to Good Crocheters as I feel like it’s a great resource to reference. This book is very organized and provides lots of helpful tips along the way. If you’re a beginner crocheter, this is one book you want to have in your collection. You will understand everything from what to include in your crochet kit to making different stitches to completing your first couple of projects. If you’re an experienced crocheter, you still might find some crochet tips useful. This book was a blast to read, and I’m so glad I picked it up!
